Default Password
When you log in for the first time, your default password will be your birth date in the format DDMonYYYY. For instance, if your birthdate is April 20, 1998, your default password will be 20Apr1998. For security reasons, you will be asked to set a new password during your initial login.
Password Requirements
At minimum, all FIU Passwords must:
- It must be a minimum of 16 characters
- It must have at least one number, one uppercase, or one lowercase
- Special characters are required! Allowable special characters are ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + | ` - = \ { } [ ] : ” ; ’ < > ? , . / and the space character (depending on system support)
- Cannot include your username, first name, last name, or full name
- Cannot be one of the last 10 passwords
- The new password will not expire
Password tips and security recommendations
- Strengthen Your Password: Make sure that your passwords are at least 16 characters long, include a variety of capital and lowercase letters, digits, and symbols, and are not based on any private or public information. Avoid creating passwords that includes information such as your name, birthdate, pet's name, or simple words or phrases.
- Exit Securely: Always remember to log out from programs and websites, and close your browser (such as Firefox or Chrome) once you're done with your session, especially when using public computers.
- Account Security: Your account's safety lies in your hands. Please refrain from sharing your password, even with technicians; The DoIT team will never ask you for your password.
- Protect with Uniqueness: Safeguard your accounts by using distinct passwords for different systems. This practice significantly reduces the potential impact of any security breaches.
- We highly recommend using passphrases as they are typically more secure and easier to remember. See the example below on how to create a strong password using passphrases:

Resetting/Changing Passwords
- Student, Faculty, Staff, and POI:
- If you forgot your password, just click on "forgot password?" on any of the FIU account login pages, such as MyFIU, and follow the steps to recover your account.
- If you know your password and would like to change it, visit account.fiu.edu and under security you will have the option to reset your password.
- Parent or Delegate passwords can be reset or changed here.
- Departmental Accounts passwords can be reset or changed at account.fiu.edu.
- Club Account passwords can only be reset by contacting Campus Life to fill out your password reset form. An FIU representative will reset your password and provide it to the club owner.
